Ocean and Coastal Resources

Ocean and Coastal Resources (OCRE) will educate students with regard to the economic, environmental and social issues related to the development of marine resources, while providing them with the scientific back ground needed to understand these issues. These resources include fisheries, oil and gas, ocean mining and others. The OCRE degree differs considerably in content from the Marine Sciences (MARS) curriculum through increased focus on geological and biological sciences, along with economics, political science and law. While the present MARS program is designed to produce well-rounded physical scientists, the OCRE curriculum is oriented more to societal and environmental impacts of ocean science.

Many of the resource development issues in today’s world center around environmental pollution, sustainable development, biological diversity, fisheries and mariculture and oil and gas development. Every aspect of marine resources development is undergoing rapid growth. From fisheries management to ocean mining and off shore oil and gas development, the demand for trained entry-level personnel from both government and industry is extremely high. There is also a strong demand for individuals who understand and can use scientific information in the planning and management process, but who are not themselves bench or field scientists.
